15 min readUpdated 1 December 2025
Applies to:All funding applicants

Most South African government funders now require online applications. This guide walks you through the four major funding portals—SEDFA, DTIC OIS, NYDA, and NEF—with step-by-step instructions, portal-specific tips, and troubleshooting solutions to help you navigate each system successfully.

Portal Updates: These portals are regularly updated. Screenshots and interface descriptions are current as of December 2025. Core processes remain stable even when visual design changes.

Who This Is For

  • SMEs applying for government grants, loans, or incentives online
  • First-time portal users unfamiliar with online funding systems
  • Applicants experiencing technical difficulties with funder portals
  • Consultants helping clients navigate multiple funder systems

Before You Start

Technical Requirements

Computer & Browser Requirements

  • Device: Desktop or laptop recommended (mobile is difficult for complex forms)
  • Browser: Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (latest versions)
  • Internet: Stable connection (portal sessions time out after 15-30 mins of inactivity)
  • PDF Reader: Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing downloaded forms
  • Pop-ups: Allow pop-ups from funder domains (often blocked by default)
  • JavaScript: Must be enabled in browser settings
Avoid Internet Explorer: Do not use Internet Explorer or older browsers. Most portals no longer support them and forms will not submit correctly.

Documents You'll Need (Digital Copies)

Prepare scanned copies of these documents before starting any application. Most portals require PDF format under 5MB per file:

  • Certified ID copies (all directors/members)
  • CIPC registration documents (COR14.3 or COR15.1A)
  • Tax clearance certificate or TCS PIN
  • Bank statements (last 6 months, PDF format)
  • Financial statements or management accounts
  • Business plan (for larger applications)
  • B-BBEE certificate or EME affidavit
  • Proof of business address
Naming Tip: Name files clearly: "CompanyName_ID_Director1.pdf", "CompanyName_BankStatements_2025.pdf". This helps you locate them quickly during upload.
