South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) registration of practice + every practising vet/nurse. SAHPRA Section 22A schedule-permit for keeping controlled medicines. Department of Health waste-handling registration (vet waste is medical waste). Municipal business licence for the premises. ECB CoC for the X-ray installation — radiation health licence from the National Nuclear Regulator if you have imaging.

Foreign-trained vets must pass SAVC's professional exam (2 sittings/year, ~6-month cycle). Local BVSc graduates from Onderstepoort register within 4–6 weeks of qualification, pending paperwork. Practice registration (separate from individual vet registration) takes 3–8 weeks after SAVC inspection. Operating without practice registration is a SAVC disciplinary offence and a Criminal Procedure Act issue.
