Beyond universal compliance requirements like CIPC, SARS, and B-BBEE, many industries require sector-specific registrations. Construction companies need CIDB grading, security firms need PSIRA, and healthcare providers need professional registrations. This guide covers the key sector registrations that funders may require.

Important: Funders targeting specific sectors will require relevant sector registrations. IDC manufacturing funding requires different registrations than SEDFA tourism funding.

Why Sector Registrations Matter

  • Legal requirement: Operating without required licenses is illegal
  • Credibility: Demonstrates professionalism and competence
  • Contract eligibility: Many contracts require specific registrations
  • Funding access: Sector-specific funding requires proof of registration

Construction: CIDB Registration

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) is mandatory for any business that undertakes construction work in South Africa.

CIDB Grading System

CIDB grades contractors from 1 to 9 based on financial capability and track record:

GradeMaximum Contract ValueTypical Requirements

Funding Tip: IDC and NEF construction funding often requires minimum Grade 4-5 CIDB registration. SEDFA may work with Grade 2-3 contractors.
